Kalkan Weather and Climate
Kalkan sits at 36.25° North, 29.40° East on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, with the Taurus Mountains rising over 1,500 m behind it. Caught between the sea and the mountains, it has a climate remarkably close to Southern California: mild winters with little rain, long hot summers, and sunshine you can count on from May through October — often well beyond.
Rainfall and sunshine
Average rainfall reaches roughly 167 mm/m² in December and January, easing to 78–125 mm/m² through February and March. Storms arrive in autumn and again between January and March. Even then the sun does not disappear: November averages 7 clear days, and December, January and February 8 each.
The winds
Through the summer the Meltem prevails. It blows from the north to north-west — warm air rising off the Aegean during the day, turning to a land breeze in the evening. It is what makes July and August bearable on a rooftop terrace.
The Khamsin is the opposite: hot, dry and dusty, pushing temperatures up and humidity down for a few days at a time.
Is Kalkan only good in summer?
No. Kalkan is sunny around 300 days a year, and spring and autumn have a character of their own — the ideal conditions to explore without the scorching sun.
Those are the best months for walking the Lycian Way, cycling in the hills, touring the ancient Lycian cities by car and stopping wherever the food looks good. In autumn you can join the grape harvest and tasting at Likya Wines.
In spring the meltwater from the Taurus cools the sea slightly, but the hills turn green, orange and lemon blossom scents the air, and yellow Spanish broom covers the slopes. The peaks are still white while Saklıkent Canyon and Gizlikent Waterfall run full — which makes spring the best season for rafting, kayaking and canyoning at Saklıkent and Kaputaş.
When to come, by month
April – May
Green hills, blossom, full waterfalls. Best for hiking the Lycian Way and canyoning. Sea still cool from Taurus meltwater.
June – August
Hot and dry, sunshine guaranteed. The Meltem takes the edge off in the evenings. Beach and boat season.
September – October
Sea at its warmest, crowds gone, ancient cities comfortable to walk. Grape harvest at Likya Wines.
November – March
Mild, with the year’s rain. Still 7–8 clear days a month. Quiet town, green landscape, good for long walks.
